Consumer Report recommend refilling as cost-effective measure

Canadian news network CTV News have recently tested 135 printers in a Consumer Report in a bid to discover the most cost-effective printer, and cartridge refilling as a measure against expensive-to-operate printers.

We do want to make it clear - there is a difference in REFILL and RE MANUFACTURE, although some people use one word for the next, it is important to double check.

Mr Inkbee Toner cartridges contain the toner, a powder used in place of ink in laser printers, and mechanism to produce a printed document in laser printers.

In our remanufacturing process, the cartridges is disassembled, into approximately 30 pieces which are cleaned and examined for wear and defects. Unused toner and waste toner are removed from the cartridge using special vacuum equipment which prevents explosions. (Don't try this at home.)

Any parts which are worn or defective are replaced during re-assembly. These parts can be seals, gears, blades for regulating toner coming out of the cartridge and cleaning. Where the cartridge has a built-in drum this is replaced and the cartridge refilled with toner. After testing, if a replacement computer chip is required this is installed.

5% Coverage - How much ink will that do?

We all what to know how many pages we can print with our inkjet and laser cartridges, and it's very exciting to think we have it figured out when we by a new one, check the box and see the word "yield". Frustrated, thinking you are going to get 400 pages using your new purchase and only got 150 pages instead you look at the box again and ask what the heck is 5% coverage?

One less piece of paper we hope, that allows us to email credit card and debit reciepts to customers rather than slips of paper. The new program will be great for phone orders and trade shows, but we know that many of our clients will enjoy to convenience and paperless service in store as well. The new program was installed this week, and of course things are never as "simple" as the sales person lets on! We believe it will all be great as we learn the new tricks here!

We are thrilled about the HP Color LaserJet CP2025 printers and CM2320 multifunctions and looking forward to a group of new customers once they find out we can re-manufacture their empties with huge savings. We are of course always happy when we can promore REUSE of those and other cartridges a long time before they are RECYCLED!

Yikes about Lexmark 100XL

Below is an posting from Inkjet Masters, one of the many forums we follow. The short story is the Lexmark 100XL cartridges, like many of the new Lexmark inkjet cartridges will not be refillable. If you are getting ready to buy a new printer soon we are are happy to offer you our opinions before you go out shopping and help you with your decisions.

Greedy Lexmark has come with something very sinister about ink cartridges.

As you know, Lexmark is now using permanent printheads like Canon, using however only 4 cartridges (no photo black) and has come up with this PGI-5Bk clone called 100XL. You will pay € 29.90 for one of these pigment black cartridge, which is still considerable compared to the € 15 for the Canon's PGI-5Bk. But wait: you can actually buy the same cartridge (same ink capacity, same design, will fit theoratically in all new Lexmark printers) for € 5, which is called 105XL by Lexmark. Aha, most of us want to buy this same designed cartridges for only 16 % of the price compared to the 100XL.

Lexmark is very greedy and put different RFID chips into their printers/cartridges, which cannot be refilled or the ink level monitor be disabled, making the much cheaper 105XL only be installable in their higher end and thus much more expensive models. Yes you can install the 100XL in those high end expensive models, but you cannot install the same capacity cartridge, but renamed and rechipped and much cheaper 105XL into the lower end printers.

The beginning of the month is always exciting waiting to see what Patti will have come up with for our window. "Its ~~NOT~~ Being Green!"

Thank you for friends around town who have lent us their fuzzy green animals to celebrate Spring,the Enviroment and St Patricks all together!

In the meantime we are preparing for our new agents, creating thier own pages on our webite. How useful is google streetview finding photos of the different businesses! What a diverse group of entreprenures we are getting to know across Grey and Bruce counties! John & I are really looking forward to taking some great road trips with this new weather and see more! Pizza & CPR

A month a go a lovely woman came into the store to ask how to make the 3D snowflakes in our window display. We had lots of interest in our display and we are happy to tell folks about Patti Smith, Show Off HomeStaging (S.O.S) who designs our main store window.

While her visit she began to suffer serious problems that we suggest were about her heart. Although she "didn't want to cause us a bother" we were able to get her to relax and call the paramedics.

The next day we made arrangements to update our CPR and First Aid Training, and invited friends and customers to join us. Tomorrow night we look forward sharing 15 people at the store after work for Pizza and Trainig to bring to Learn and Update our skills and hope we don't need to use them.

We had hoped the bigger store could be a place for events like this some times. We will let you know how it goes!

How Much Can We Print?

How many pages can I get from this cartridge?

We are asked this question often from folks, and the answer is different for everyone. What are you printing? we have to ask first.

When you buy a new cartridge, like say HP, you will notice on the box that the HP 56 should print 520 pages. This however will be based a percentage of ink covering the page, most companies test on 5% coverage Which is an ISO Standard. So what the heck does THAT look like? I have attached a link from PC Magazine that can show you what 3%, 12%, 17% and 22.5% samples look like.

We recommend that before you buy your next printer you look not only at the price of the printer, but the size of the ink or toner cartridge. You will save money if the printer will use larger cartridges. You won't have to refill them as often AND reduce the number cartridges required.

As you are managing you operating budget, the Office Supplies line can be easily reduced by researching what the new printer will cost to run over the year, rather than only what the printer will cost. Sometime spending $50 more on the printer could save you $300 or more dollars on ink & toner in the first year.

We will be using the Blog to share the news with customers, agents and the curious about what is happening here at the Inkery!

Some of it will be about products.. I know a few of you are waiting impatiently for our technology friends to provide us with new chips for Samsung 108 and Lexmark E260 toner cartridges so we can re manufacture the empties you have been saving up from those new printers you bought in the last year. We thought we could let you all know what's happening as soon as we know by using the blog.

If you know our website or know us, you are aware we deliver to many communities weekly. Our independent agents, like Jolley's Dairy Bar and Video in Flesherton, Little Tub Technology in Tobermorey and KeyLime Creative in Paisley and 11 other places in Grey & Bruce Counties will be glad to meet you.
