Yikes about Lexmark 100XL

Below is an posting from Inkjet Masters, one of the many forums we follow.  The short story is the Lexmark 100XL cartridges, like many of the new Lexmark inkjet cartridges will not be refillable.  If you are getting ready to buy a new printer soon we are are happy to offer you our opinions before you go out shopping and help you with your decisions.

Greedy Lexmark has come with something very sinister about ink cartridges.

As you know, Lexmark is now using permanent printheads like Canon, using however only 4 cartridges (no photo black) and has come up with this PGI-5Bk clone called 100XL. You will pay € 29.90 for one of these pigment black cartridge, which is still considerable compared to the € 15 for the Canon's PGI-5Bk. But wait: you can actually buy the same cartridge (same ink capacity, same design, will fit theoratically in all new Lexmark printers) for € 5, which is called 105XL by Lexmark. Aha, most of us want to buy this same designed cartridges for only 16 % of the price compared to the 100XL.

Lexmark is very greedy and put different RFID chips into their printers/cartridges, which cannot be refilled or the ink level monitor be disabled, making the much cheaper 105XL only be installable in their higher end and thus much more expensive models. Yes you can install the 100XL in those high end expensive models, but you cannot install the same capacity cartridge, but renamed and rechipped and much cheaper 105XL into the lower end printers.

Here is what we found out about Lexmarks new 100XL inkjets
Thank you from
What would you say if you see two bottles of the same wine in your grocery: one for 30 dollars, but the other for 5 dollar. Hey I want to buy the cheaper bottle, but your grocer is demanding you to pay a fee of 300 dollars, before you are allowed to get the bottle for 5 euro. If not: you will pay 30 dollars for the same bottle !!!

My goodness, those guys at Lexmark have become even more greedier than the bankers causing the worldwide financial crisis.....

  1. Do you have any further info on how to get around this? I tried to put my original RFID chip in the 105 cartridge and it sort of worked. However, the printer still thought that it was empty and wouldn't allow printing!

Obviously it doesn't REALLY check the ink level, but how does the chip "see" the level??

    Anyone know a workaround?

  2. Your right JLW, everything seems fine until you want to print. So, I'm sorry there just doesn't seem a away around those RFID chips... and I imagine that is Lexmark's idea. We have been recommending that people should review their operating costs for replacing those cartridges vs buying a more enviormentally friendly printer.

  3. I swapped the chip from my 100 to my new 105xl. it says the ink is low, but allows printing and copying..... how does the printer calculate ink level?

  4. It is great if you got that chip to work, there is not a way at the moment, to reset the ink levels. this is true for many hp and lexmark cartridges. Just keep an eye on your printing and you will know when it needs to be refilled.

  5. I swapped the RFID chip and it prints great but just is stuck on saying it is low. I don't care because I effectively couldn't even use my printer before because I couldn't afford the ink.

  6. I figured it out!!! Take the RFID chip out find the black square on the front about 3/16 by 3/16 of an inch. Find the 2 wires in the board that complete the connection between that square and use a knife on the chip to break the connection between both sides of the square. Your printer should then show the black ink is full. It has worked for me for awile now. I thought i would pass it on to save you all some money. REFILL the ink don't buy new.

  7. well, i run into a problem after a while. At the beginning I was able to print with 105XL but with my old chip, and it would give me an error saying that I have low ink, but later it stooped printing telling me that I have to replace the cartridge. If anyone find a way around this please post! Thanks
